Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
